Gift card balance check: how to see what is left on your card

Naar overzicht |
Three gift cards with bars showing a full, half and almost empty balance.

You check the balance of a Gifty gift card online with the Gifty balance checker, using the code on your card. If the card is in your Wallet, the balance is on the pass, and in a shop the staff can scan the card at the till. Below you also see what each status means and what to do when the balance looks wrong.

Gift card balance check in short

  • Online: enter your code in the balance checker to see what is left.
  • Wallet: if the card is in your Wallet, the pass shows the balance and the expiry date.
  • In a shop: the staff scan the card at the till and see the balance.
  • Looks wrong? First check earlier spending, the status and the expiry date.

How do you check your gift card balance online?

Online you need the code of your card. These are the steps:

  1. Open the Gifty balance checker.
  2. Enter the code of your gift card.
  3. See how much is left on the card.

The code is on the card. If you received a digital card, it is in the email or message that came with it. Handle the code like cash: whoever has it may try to use the card.

The checker only works for Gifty cards. If your card comes from another provider, even one with a similar name, look on that provider’s website.

Can you see the balance in your Wallet?

Yes, if you added the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The pass shows the balance, the expiry date and the QR code you use in a shop. From the pass you can open all transactions on the card and see when you spent what.

You add a card by scanning its QR code or by tapping through from the email. That also works for a card you received as a PDF by email or WhatsApp. Gifty explains this in its blog on Apple and Google Wallet for gift cards (in Dutch): read the Wallet blog.

When the balance is 0.00 euros or the expiry date has passed, the card disappears from your Wallet automatically. So if a card is missing, check that first.

How do you check the balance in a shop?

In a shop you do not have to type anything. The staff scan the card at the till and see the balance on screen. With Gifty this works with cash registers such as unTill and MplusKASSA. Businesses find the steps in the documentation for unTill and MplusKASSA, both in Dutch.

Ask for the balance before you pay. Then you know whether the card covers the bill or whether you pay the difference another way. If the bill is lower than the balance, the rest stays on the card and you take it home again.

What do Issued, Redeemed and Expired mean?

Every card has a status. You meet these terms at the business, at the till or in the dashboard. This is what they mean:

StatusWhat it meansCan you still pay with it?
IssuedThe card is active and has a balanceYes
RedeemedThe full balance has been used, 0.00 euros is leftNo
ExpiredThe validity period of the card has passedNo
BlockedThe card has been blocked, for example because of fraud or at the customer’s requestNo
RefundedThe purchase of the card was reversedNo

A card can be partly used several times. After each part payment the status stays Issued, with a lower balance. Only when the whole balance is gone does it become Redeemed.

Has the card expired? Whether you can still use it is up to the business. How long a card stays valid and what can happen afterwards is explained in Gifty’s blog on card validity (in Dutch): read the validity blog.

What if the balance looks wrong?

Is there less on the card than you expected? Go through these points:

  • Used before: the card may already have been partly spent. Check the transactions in your Wallet.
  • Wrong code: type the code again, slowly.
  • Status or expiry date: check that the card has not expired, been blocked or been refunded.
  • Other provider: if the card is not from Gifty, the checker shows nothing.

Still not right? Contact the business where you bought or used the card. The business can look at the transactions on the card and tell you what happened.

What if you lost your gift card?

First see whether the card exists digitally, for example in your email or your Wallet. If it is really gone, contact the business where you bought or received it, and keep your proof of purchase or order confirmation at hand.

Whether a card can be replaced, and under which conditions, differs per situation. Always ask before you assume the balance will come back.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the code of my gift card?

On the card itself. With a digital card, look in the email or message in which you received it. If the card is in your Wallet you do not need to type the code, because the balance is shown on the pass.

Is this the same as Giftly?

No. This page is about gift cards from Gifty (spelled with a t and a y) and the balance checker on gifty.nl. If your card comes from another provider, even one with a similar name, you cannot check it here. Look on that provider’s website or in their email instead.

Does the rest stay on my card if I only spend part of it?

Yes. If the amount to pay is lower than the balance, the rest stays on the card. You can use the card again later, until it expires.

Can I check the balance without the code?

The balance checker works with the code of your card. If you do not have it at hand, look in your Wallet or ask in the shop where you use the card.

Why did my gift card disappear from my Wallet?

A card is removed from your Wallet automatically when the balance reaches 0.00 euros or when the expiry date has passed. If neither applies, ask the business where you bought or used the card.
